Providence, Rhode Island was shaken on Saturday after a deadly shooting at Brown University killed two students and injured nine others. The attack occurred inside a classroom during final exam preparations, triggering hours of chaos and forcing students and faculty into an overnight lockdown.
Authorities say a person of interest is now in custody. However, investigators have not yet released details about a motive or charges.
Attack Inside Engineering Classroom in Brown
The shooting happened Saturday afternoon inside the Barus & Holley building, which houses Brown University’s School of Engineering. At the time, students were attending review sessions ahead of final exams.
During a Principles of Economics study session, a masked man carrying a rifle entered a classroom of about 60 students and opened fire. The session was nearly over when the shooting began.
A law enforcement official said the gunman fired more than 40 rounds from a 9 mm handgun. Two students were killed at the scene. Nine others were injured, some critically.
Campus Locked Down Overnight
Following the shooting, police ordered an immediate shelter-in-place across campus. Students and staff locked themselves inside classrooms, libraries, dormitories, and offices as hundreds of officers searched for the suspect.

Survivors Share Their Stories
Spencer Yang, an 18-year-old student who was shot in the leg, said he helped a seriously injured classmate while they hid together. To keep the student conscious, he kept talking until help arrived.
Another student, Emma Ferraro, was working in the building’s lobby when she heard gunshots. She ran to a nearby building and remained there for several hours.
Across campus, fear spread quickly as sirens filled the air and armed officers surrounded academic buildings and dorms.
Suspect Detained Miles Away
Early Sunday morning, authorities detained a person of interest at a Hampton Inn hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island, about 20 miles from campus. FBI agents and local police searched the hotel and blocked off part of the hallway with crime scene tape.
The FBI director confirmed the detention in a social media post. Police said the detained individual is in their 20s or 30s and is not facing charges at this time.
Officials declined to share the suspect’s identity or connection to Brown University. They said the investigation remains active.

University President Christina Paxson called the attack devastating and said the community faces a long recovery. She confirmed that one injured student had been released from the hospital, while others remain in critical but stable condition.
