Sydney witnessed one of the darkest nights in its recent history after a mass shooting at Bondi Beach targeted Australia’s Jewish community during a Hanukkah celebration. Authorities have declared the incident a terrorist attack. As of the latest official update, at least 16 people are dead, including a child, and 29 others are injured.
The attack has shocked Australia and drawn strong reactions from global leaders, with security tightened worldwide around Jewish events.
Attack Strikes During Hanukkah Gathering

The shooting occurred on Saturday evening at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach. At the time, more than 1,000 people had gathered to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah. According to New South Wales Police, the attackers deliberately targeted the Jewish community.
Gunfire erupted suddenly, sending crowds into panic. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as people ran for cover. Several said the shots felt endless.
Police later confirmed that the attack was “designed to target Sydney’s Jewish community” and officially classified it as a terrorist incident.
Rising Death Toll and Casualties Increase
Initial reports said at least 11 people had been killed. However, New South Wales Health Minister Ryan Park later confirmed that the death toll had risen to 16, including one child who died from injuries at Sydney Children’s Hospital. It remains unclear whether this number includes the attackers.
At least 29 people were wounded, many seriously. Two police officers were also among the dead, according to officials.
Hospitals across Sydney activated emergency protocols as ambulances rushed victims from the scene.
Suspects Identified and Explosives Found
Police confirmed there were two attackers. One suspect was shot dead at the scene. The second is in critical condition in hospital and remains under police guard.
Authorities also secured and removed explosive devices found inside a nearby vehicle, raising fears that the attack could have been even more devastating.
In a separate act of bravery, a civilian identified by relatives as Ahmed Al Ahmed wrestled a firearm away from one of the attackers. He was shot twice and remains hospitalized. Leaders across Australia and abroad have praised his courage.

Among those killed was British-born Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a father of five, according to his family. His death has deeply shaken Jewish communities in Australia and abroad.
An Israeli citizen was also among the victims, Israel’s foreign ministry confirmed. Israeli officials reacted with shock and anger, accusing the Australian government of allowing antisemitism to surge.
Bondi is home to a significant Jewish population and is known for Jewish schools, kosher restaurants, and bakeries. For many residents, the attack felt deeply personal.
Prime Minister Calls It ‘Evil Terrorism’

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed the nation, calling the attack “an act of evil, antisemitism, and terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation.”
He added, “An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian.”
The prime minister pledged full support to the victims’ families and said authorities would act decisively against extremism and hate.
Trump and World Leaders React
Strongly condemn the ghastly terrorist attack carried out today at Bondi Beach, Australia, targeting people celebrating the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. On behalf of the people of India, I extend my sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.…

US President Donald Trump mourned the Bondi Beach victims during remarks at a White House Christmas reception. He also referenced the mass shooting at Brown University in the United States, calling both events tragic.
“That was a terrible attack — 11 dead, 29 badly wounded,” Trump said of the Bondi shooting. “That was a purely antisemitic attack.”
Trump praised the man who tackled one of the attackers, calling him “very, very brave,” and urged unity against hatred.
The Palestinian Authority also condemned the attack, expressing solidarity with Australia and rejecting all forms of violence, terrorism, and extremism.
Global Security Tightened for Hanukkah

Following the Bondi Beach shooting, security around Hanukkah events was increased worldwide.
In Berlin, police intensified protection at the Brandenburg Gate, where a large menorah lighting was planned. In New York, Mayor Eric Adams ordered extra protection for synagogues and public celebrations. Similar steps were taken in London and Warsaw.
Officials stressed there was no immediate evidence of linked threats, but vigilance was necessary.
Antisemitism Concerns in Australia
Jewish leaders and journalists say the attack comes amid rising antisemitism in Australia. According to community data, antisemitic incidents have surged by as much as 700% since the start of the Israel-Gaza war in October 2023.
The Australian government appointed a special envoy last year to combat antisemitism. Still, community members say fear has grown.
“This isn’t a conspiracy,” said Australian Jewish journalist Amie Liebowitz. “This is real, and it’s terrifying.”
Rare and Devastating for Australia Image
Mass shootings of this scale are rare in Australia. The Bondi Beach attack is the deadliest since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, which killed 35 people and led to sweeping gun control reforms.
After Port Arthur, Australia banned rapid-fire weapons, introduced strict background checks, and launched a massive gun buyback scheme. These measures dramatically reduced gun violence for decades.
That is why the Bondi Beach attack has stunned the nation.
Investigation is Ongoing my friends
New South Wales Police have set up a Public Information and Inquiry Centre to help families locate loved ones. A memorial site for the victims is also being arranged.
Authorities continue to investigate the motive, the attackers’ background, and whether additional threats exist.
As Australia mourns, the attack has left an indelible scar — not only on Sydney’s Jewish community but on the nation as a whole.
